Viola d'Amores! - 7 May 2008, 11:33 pm
I am highly excited to have an appointment to visit some viola d'amores at the Library of Congress tomorrow morning. It's going to be an exciting but long week and a half -- three concerts in three different cities (Washington DC, New York City, and then Philadelphia). EEek!
Last Class at Temple - 5 May 2008, 12:42 pm
I just taught my last class here -- on Jazz history. I am a little terrified of the subject because of my ignorance, but I managed to cobble together what I thought was a reasonably coherent narrative starting at the beginning (wherever that is) and leading up to the revolutions of the 1960s and 70s. If I had only developed an ear for this stuff earlier!
Mahler at the Kimmell - 4 May 2008, 10:54 am
Last night I was treated to the Mahler 8 Symphony at the Kimmell Center. Aside from a few noisy distractions, it was really quite good. It's always fun to hear Philadelphia Orchestra people play music that is really meant for them. The soloists were quite amazing too!
Stockhausen finally "exhonerated"? - 2 May 2008, 4:29 pm
This article in the New York Times says that Stockhausen has been "exonerated" for his remarks about 9/11.
A program announcement is not the kind of thing that makes big headlines, and Bang on a Can said it has not received one comment about putting Stockhausen in its lineup. The composer, who died in December at age 79, was widely excoriated for the remarks, which he made several weeks after the terror attacks. He said that he was only speaking allegorically and that his words had been misunderstood.
Actually Stockhausen's comments weren't made "several weeks" after 9/11. They were made on September 19, as far as I know. The Times gets it wrong again...
It doesn't surprise me that there hasn't been one negative comment. I hope in the future people don't cancel countless performances of composers' works because they are misinterpreted by the media.

Who Will Win? - 22 April 2008, 11:15 am
Weekend; Spring - 20 April 2008, 3:38 pm
Since my cell phone got the white screen of death last week, I have been trying to deal with this new gizmo. Unfortunately, most of my phone numbers didn't transfer over, so I have lost a good deal of contact information. However, the new phone has a much better camera than the old phone. Here are some photos from my neighborhood, from Temple University, and from center city!

Also, it actually plays mp3 files! After a little messing around with it I was able to upload a bunch of mp3s onto its ridiculous 2 gigabyte internal memory chip.
I have always been intrigued by the idea that a thing might be able to play mp3s, take halfway decent photos, and be able to call people. Even though the phone I have was on the cheap side, I think my new unit might actually do all three of these things reasonably well!
And, by the way...while I'm having fun with the phone, another dissertation chapter was sent out yesterday.
Eek - 17 April 2008, 10:33 pm
Spring is here, and soon there will be some pictures of spring in Philadelphia!
I have been horrifically busy. So busy, in fact, that I didn't think I could make it home last night on the transportation. Fortunately I feel better today.
Looks like from May 8-18 I'm going to be extremely busy. On May 11 I'm playing a Matthews Passion in Washington; on May 14 a lecture/recital at the Metropolitan Museum in New York; and on May 18 a baroque concert in Philadelphia. On that May 18th thing I'm playing an Ariosti viola d'amore sonata with two absolutely fabulous continuo players. What a bunch of great opportunities!
