Performance

Paul Miller and Karlheinz Stockhausen

Since I was three years old, I've been peforming on the violin and viola. More recently I've had the great fortune of working on the modular synthesizer, the electric violin, and the viola d'amore. You can get a sense of my work over in the Projects pages. Among the many ensembles I've been lucky to work with are Pittsburgh's own Chatham Baroque, the Washington Bach Consort, the National Cathedral Orchestra, the Hawai`i Performing Arts Festival, the Bethlehem Bach Festival, the Boulder Bach Festival and many other esteemed groups around the USA.

With Karlheinz Stockhausen

One of the highlights of my career was giving the world premiere of the viola version of Karlheinz Stockhausen's solo piece "In Freundschaft". I subsequently helped the composer edit the score for publication. I played the piece again at my Master's viola recital at Kilbourn Hall, at the Eastman School of Music. Since Stockhausen composed it for the clarinet, different versions of "In Freundschaft" have been made for many different instruments, including recorder, bassoon, horn, tuba, violoncello, etc. I was fortunate enough to learn from Stockhausen during his summer festivals in Kürten, Germany from 2001 until his passing in 2007.

The Undiscovered Viola d'Amore

Cover of the Undiscovered Viola dAmore album

My solo album, "The Undiscovered Viola d'Amore", is a full-length recording of solo and ensemble works for the unusual six- or seven-stringed instrument. I created it in 2023 with Chatham Baroque. The recording is on Centaur Records and it appears you can stream it here.

The album contains never-before heard solo works of Franz Götz and Josef Fux from a manuscript in the Musical Instrument Museum in Prague, Czech Republic. It also contains several ensemble works from the Göttweig Manuscripts in Austria. I'm extremely grateful to Chatham Baroque and Jesse Naus for helping me with the project!

Current Performing

At this time I am mostly interested in performing on historical ensembles, and electronic music performance. I'm particularly intrigued with developing hybrid machine/human interfaces for new music.
